Welcome to Chickenbone Cards, the home of
The Heubel Reference Guide to Souvenir Playing Cards.
This site aims to become your definitive resource to photographic souvenir playing cards from the 1890's through the 1930's. These souvenir cards show vintage scenic and social images from most of the USA, Canada and Int'l locations at a time when cameras were rare and it was easier to purchase a deck of cards with keepsake images of your travels than it was to own a camera.
So, who is Robert Heubel? I'm a collector of playing cards. My collection is the basis of this website. My interest in these cards began when my grandmother played "Go Fish" with me using a deck of California Souvenir Playing Cards. Intrigued by the images on the cards as a kid, I started collecting them. But what good is having a collection if you can't share them?
It is the goal of this site to give you all known information and images of these decks. Do you have a deck of souvenir cards not posted here? Then, let us know.
If you enjoy this site, we encourage you to tell your friends about it. And if you're feeling generous we encourage you to contact us to make a small donation.
Big thanks go to Flatcar6 Studios for the web design that made sharing this collection possible. And special thanks go to Tom & Judy Dawson for their work on The Hochman Encyclopedia of American Playing Cards, as well as 52 + Joker club members, who have been great supporters.
